Definition

The usage of a car may be regarded as being either for the use of private individuals ('private use') or for use as a pooled car. A pool car incurs no charge on the benefit of a car and hence there is no requirement to pay Class 1A National Insurance contributions for the car or for fuel supplied for the car. However, there are a number of conditions for a car to qualify as a pool car. If these are not all met, then the car should be regarded as for 'private use' and subject to Class 1A National Insurance.
