Definition
The NI certificates currently used in the system are:
CA2700
Employees who present a CA2700 certificate are paying reduced National Insurance contributions (NICs). This is most likely to apply to a worker who is here being employed in a second job, as he/she will already be paying sufficient NICs in his/her first job to qualify for reduced NIC rates that apply to earnings above the UEL (Upper Earnings Level). The certificate was previously called RD950.
CA4139
Formerly CA270 or CF383.
Specifies whether the employee has presented a CA4139 Certificate of Election. This certificate gives the authority to deduct reduced rate contributions.
CA4140
Formerly CA271 or CF384.
Specifies whether the employee has presented a CA4140 Certificate of Age Exception. This certificate gives the authority to stop an employee's National Insurance contributions.
Note
Up to the end of tax year 2002/2003, it was possible to have either a CA2700 or a CA4140 certificate for NI category C not contracted-out.
