Documentation
Definition
The country key contains information which the system uses to check entries such as the length of the postal code or bank account number.
The two-character ISO code in accordance with ISO 3166, which is delivered by SAP as a default, is usually used.
It could also be the vehicle license plate country-code or a typical country key, for example, in Germany the Federal statistics office key.
The country keys are determined at system installation in the global settings.
The definition of the country key in the SAP system does not have to match political or government entities.
Since the country key does not have to correspond to the ISO code in all installations, programs that differ according to certain values of the country key cannot query the country key T005-LAND1, but have to program based on the ISO code T005 INTCA.

Notes
Field changes
This field can be changed at day level.
Time independence
You can define this field time-independently in the cost center accounting customizing menu item 'Master data'.
- If you activate the time-dependence flag in the customizing, you can maintain different field contents for any period.
- If you do not activate the customizing flag, you can only maintain one field value which is valid for all periods. There is, however, an indirect time-dependence, if you simultaneously change a time-dependent field. A new field value can be entered for the time-independent field for the validity interval of the time-dependent field.

A telephone number is described in SAPphone with three attributes:
Attribute in SAPphone Example Part of telephone number Example
Country key DE Country code +49
Number prefix 06227/7 Area code + main number 06227/7
Length of extension 5 Extension 12345
The telephone number DE 06227/7 described in SAPphone with a five character extension would include, for example, the extensions
06227/7-34567 and 06227/7-45678.
Dependencies
The assignment of the country code to the country keys is maintained in Customizing under General settings.

Procedure
Enter the country key of the VAT registration number's country and the number itself in the next field.
Use
The country key in this field is used to determine the check rules stored for the VAT registration number.
Note
The VAT registration number consists of a letter and number combination up to a maximum of 15 characters and is normally not the same as the tax number. The first two characters of the VAT registration number contain the ISO code of the reporting country. Note that you enter a corresponding country key in the "Country" field. This can also be the ISO code if you use the ISO code as the country key in the system.
