Documentation
Definition
Specifies which material cost estimate is used for the following:
- Variance calculation
- Calculation of target costs for valuating work in process
- Calculation of target costs for valuating scrap
Use
You use alternative material cost estimates in the following situations:
- In variance calculation when you want to calculate variances not only in comparison to the standard price calculated in a standard cost estimate for the material but also in comparison to other prices
- When you want to use this alternative material cost estimate to valuate work in process and scrap
Procedure
- To calculate variances on the basis of an alternative material cost estimate, turn on this indicator in the target cost version and specify the costing variant and the costing version.
- To valuate work in process and scrap with an alternative material cost estimate, turn on this indicator in the valuation variant for work in process and scrap and specify the costing variant and costing version. See also: Valuation variant for WIP and scrap
- You then assign the valuation variant for work in process and scrap to the results analysis version if you want to use it to valuate work in process. (See also: Assignment of valuation variant for WIP to results analysis version
- To valuate scrap on the basis of the target costs calculated in an alternative material cost estimate, enter the valuation variant in target cost version 0. (See also: Maintain target cost versions).
Examples
Suppose you want to calculate production variances by period. In the target cost version, you enter costing variant PPC2 (modified standard cost estimate) and the associated costing version as the alternative material cost estimate.
You create a modified standard cost estmate in each period. Then at the end of the period you compare the control costs (in this case, the actual costs less the work in process and scrap) with the target costs calculated on the basis of the modified standard cost estimate.
This gives you the production variances for the period.
Dependencies
When you create a cost estimate with quantity structure, you specify the costing variant. The system then determines the costing version from the costing variant you specified.
You can view all cost estimates for a particular costing variant or costing version in the Product Cost Planning Information System.
