Definition
The generic file name is the link between a physical file and the file description.
When you import a PC file, the system looks for a generic file name that matches the physical file name.
You should not enter a path name for a generic file name.
Example
You receive files containing sales figures in a standardized structure from the various companies in your organization. You create the file description "SALES" for these. The names of the files consist of a fixed part, "SALES_" and the company number. For example, a physical file name might be SALES_4711.TXT for company 4711.
By assigning the generic file name SALES_*.TXT to the file description that you use to import the files, you link the file description to the physical files SALES_*.TXT.
Warning
It may happen that you assign generic file names to file descriptions in such a way that more than one file description matches a single physical file name. You cannot influence which file description is actually used to import the data.
For example, you have assigned the generic file name "SALES_*" to the file description "SALES". In addition, you have assigned the generic file name "*4711.TXT" to the file description "WAREHSE". In this case you cannot influence whether the system uses the file description "SALES" or "WAREHSE" to import file "SALES_4711.TXT"
You therefore need to make sure that naming conventions are observed.
