Use

A card verification value (often termed "CVV") has been introduced for credit cards as a security measure for remote sales (i.e. mail order, telephone and Internet ordering), when the retailer does not have physical access to the credit card. This is a three- or four-digit number that is printed on the card and is not stored in the magnetic strip.

Each retailer who accepts credit cards and does business via mail order, phone or the Internet must ask the card holder for this verification value and pass it on to his settlement office.
