Use
A card verification value (often abbreviated to 'CVV') for credit cards has been introduced as a security mechanism in the business area of remote sales (that is to say, for mail order, telephone order, and Internet orders); in other words, in all cases where the seller does not have physical access to the credit card. The verification value is a three- or four-digit number, which is simply printed on the credit card and not stored in the magnetic strip.
All sellers who do business by mail order, by telephone or using the Internet and who accept credit cards must ask the card holder for the card verification value and pass this value on for settlement.
