Definition
Grouping of rules within a policy category with regard to their area of operation. Examples or possible policy types are TAX (tax law), PRODLIABIL (product liability) and RISK (risk management).
Policy types correspond to the different areas from which retention rules can originate. For example, the TAX policy type defines rules for the retention of data; the same is true of the policy type PRODLIABIL. Over time, additional policy types can be added.
Use
The policy type can be used to set up independent maintenance of rules for an object type by various departments, for example the tax department of the legal department.
The maintenance authorization for the corresponding rules can then be accordingly transferred to the tax department or the department responsible for warranty management. The policy types used in a system can be freely configured in every system. Using transaction IRM_CUST you can create any number of other policy types in addition to the policy types supplied by SAP.
The GENERAL policy type
The GENERAL policy type assumes a special role. It should be used if a more specific assignment to policy types would be too specific or is not desired.
Note: If the GENERAL policy type has been used, no policies for other policy types can be created any longer. Either all policies belong to the GENERAL type, or none do. Mixing GENERAL with other policy types is therefore not possible.
- If an instance only has GENERAL type policies and it has been determined that the rules are to be inherited, the instance inherits rules for all policy types of the parent. If the parent only has GENERAL type policies, then only these are inherited.
- If an instance has various policy types and in your policy it is specified, fro example, that the TAX rules are to be inherited, only these rules are inherited from the parent. If the parent only has GENERAL, the rules of this type are inherited.
