Documentation
Definition
Indicates whether the diagnosis in question is a primary or a secondary diagnosis. The +, *, ! characters from the ICD catalog are used.
+ Dagger diagnosis: Primary diagnosis
The relevant code is regarded as being the primary code. It indicates the reason for the illness (etiology). An additional dagger diagnosis code can be used to indicate the special manifestation of this illness .
* Asterisk: Secondary diagnosis
The relevant code is regarded as being secondary. It indicates the manifestation of an illness (localization) and may only be used as a further option (in addition) to a dagger diagnosis code.
! Exclamation point: Secondary diagnosis (ONLY VALID IN GERMANY)
This code is classed as being a secondary code in ICD-10-SGBV , and, like an asterisk diagnosis code, may only be used as an (additional) optional code (ICD-10 does not contain this character!).
In the standard case, no code is provided, as indicated by blank characters. This means that a primary diagnosis is involved.
