Definition

Term that identifies the Cost Object ID.

Use

Cost objects are the activity units of the operation, to which costs can be assigned to reflect how they are incurred. The SAP system differentiates between:

  • Cost objects that are represented by a cost object ID
  • Cost objects that are represented by objects of other applications, such as production orders or sales order items

Cost objects are represented by cost object IDs in the following areas:

  • Activity-Based Costing

In Activty-Based Costing, the overhead costs are first posted to cost centers, and then allocated to the processes. From there they are further allocated to cost objects as process costs.

  • Costs for Intangible Goods and Services

When you create intangible goods and services, you can analyse the costs on a General Cost Object.

  • Product Cost by Period

In Product Cost by Period, you can build a Cost Object Hierarchy to enter actual costs that cannot be entered at material or order level. The costs that are assigned to the Cost Object Nodes of a cost object hierarchy can be distributed at period close to the single objects (for example Product Cost Collectors) assigned to the lowest cost object nodes, or are else settled to a price difference account starting directly from the cost object hierarchy.

  • Product Cost Controlling Information System

You can in addition create CO Product Groups in the Product Cost Controlling information system. You create a cost object ID for each product group, and assign materials to this cost object ID. The costs for the materials assigned are summarized in the information system, and displayed for each product group.

You can use these CO product groups for product drill-down reports.

Dependencies

The Cost Object Category defines which functions can be executed with this cost object. Functions for cost object hierarchies presuppose that the cost object entered is indicated as the top of the hierarachy.
