Definition
Two methods of amortization (depreciation) are available:
- Amortization over the total useful life
The amount of ordinary amortization equals the quotient from dividing the original acquisition cost by the total useful life. Subsequent acquisitions extend the useful life, whereas subsequent divestitures reduce the useful life.
- Amortization over the remaining useful life
The amount of ordinary amortization equals the quotient from dividing the net book value by the remaining useful life. Subsequent acquisitions or divestitures do NOT change the useful life.
