Definition
The amortization method determines if fair value adjustments are to amortized and, if so, which method is to be used.
The straight-line method has two variants:
- Amortization over the entire useful life
The ordinary amortizable amount equals the ratio of the acquisition cost and the entire useful life. Subsequent additions increase the life, whereas subsequent reductions decrease the life.
- Amortization over the remaining life
The ordinary amortizable amount equals the ratio of the remaining book value and the remaining life. Subsequent additions or reductions do not affect the remaining life.
The geometrical declining-balance method switches to straight-line amortization for the remaining life if the straight-line amortization amount is greater than the geometric declining-balance amortization amount.
