Definition

A target system is a logical name for similar SAP instances. It is mapped as an entry in a system data container. You must assign an RFC destination to a target system whereas the assignment of a product version to a target system is optional.

During development and maintenance of eCATT objects, you can obtain the references of parameters and command interfaces from a system that is different from the actual development system of the eCATT objects. This system is the maintenance system and can be specified using a target system of a system data container. It is only relevant during development and maintenance of the eCATT objects. You can also execute commands against such a maintenance system to test the corresponding test script. The target system is specified in the tab Attributes - General Data of the corresponding eCATT object editors.

Test configurations are used for executing automated tests. You can specify an SAP instance to be tested, which is also specifi user can test similar system environments consisting of different instances by changing the system data containers. The target system is specified in the eCATT object tab of the test configuration editor. This target system can be overwritten by the test workbench.

When migrating test cases to eCATT test scripts, the test cases can be read remotely from a source system. The source system is also determined using the logical name from the system data container - that is, a target system.
