Definition

An international standard number used to identify a specific material uniquely. This number always refers to a certain unit of measure or packing, in this case to a material, that has been used as an auxiliary packing material.

Normally, the European Article Number (EAN) is issued by the producer of the material. In this case, the EAN also uniquely identifies the producer.

By using a different process, the company can also use the EAN for instore numbering. The instore EAN is only known to the company.

The EAN corresponds to the Universal Product Code (UPC) used in the United States.
