This number is the main part of the document key, which is used to identify the document.

Enter the number of the document whose data you want to copy to the new document you are creating.

Procedure
When you Create a document:
You have two options for assigning the number.
- External number assignment:
- You assign an alphanumeric key.
The following special characters are not supported: "," and "&".
- You assign a numeric key.
Please note the number range defined in Customizing for the relevant document type.
- Internal number assignment.
- If you do not enter a number or enter the special character "*", the system assigns a consecutive number from the defined number range when you save the document.
When you Change or Display a document:
If you do not know the exact document number, you can search for the document via matchcode selection. You need to enter either an object linked to the document or a character string from the document description.

Procedure
If you do not know the document number, you have the following search options:
- You search for the document number generically.
To do this, enter the characters you know followed by the special character * . - You use matchcode selection.
To do this, you need to enter either an SAP object linked to the document or a character string from the short text description.

Documents are stored in the recipient list regardless of the document part or document version. This means that you only need to enter the document number and the document type.

- When searching for a document, you can enter the following character strings:
- Special character "*"
This special character masks a character string of any number of characters.
You enter, for example: *208
You receive this list as a result:
- 02080000001

- Special character "+"
This special character masks a character (any character).
You enter, for example: a+am
You receive this list as a result:
- adam
- a1am_12
