Documentation
The auto expand value specifies the maximum number of nodes in the message list of the monitor for which the tree structure is expanded automatically.
The default value for auto expand is 50. This means that a view of the tree structure is displayed in collapsed form if it contains more than 50 nodes. If you change the view and the resulting tree structure has fewer nodes (20, for example), it is expanded automatically.
