Definition

System in which integrated applications run on a common data basis.

The distribution of data between systems makes it necessary to uniquely identify each system within a network. The logical system serves this purpose.

In the SAP context, the client corresponds to a logical system. In client maintenance you can assign a client to a logical system (via Goto -> Detail).

The logical system is relevant for the following SAP areas:

  • ALE in general: Communication occurs between two or more logical systems.
  • ALE business processes (such as cost center accounting): Definition of the system in which a given application runs. Master data changes, for example, may only be made in this system.
  • Workflow objects: The key of a workflow object always contains the logical system in which the object is to be found.

When maintaining the logical system, note the following:

  • The logical system must be unique in the company. It may not be used by any other system in the ALE system network.
  • In the productive system, the logical system may no longer be changed. If the logical system of a document reference does not have its initial value and does not match your current system, then the system assumes that the document is located in another system.
