Definition
Internationally standardized number that uniquely identifies a specific material. This number always relates to a particular unit of measure or packaging.
The International Article Number (or EAN for short) is normally assigned by the manufacturer of the material. In this case, the EAN also identifies the manufacturer uniquely.
In addition, a company can assign EANs by means of different methods of so-called instore numbering. An instore EAN is known only to the respective company.
The EAN is the equivalent of the Universal Product Code (UPC) used in America.
