Definition
Text Element Identifier (TEI) Code is a mnemonic symbol identifying a data element or group of data elements (Data Set Group).
It is a code composed of three alpha letters plus the space character used for identifying a data element or data element group in a telecommunication message, variable format tape record or bar coded message.
REMARKS in the Provisioning V and Centralized Procurement Data Files, deletion of a given TEI or multiple set TEI is effected by transmitting the three alpha TEI characters with a dash (-) in the fourth position. A terminating slash (/)in the fifth position is also required when not the last TEI in a message or record.
Business Rules:
In magnetic tape records and telecommunication messages, a TEI comprises of the four character TEI code (three alpha letters plus a space), subject data element value or data element group values and a terminating delimiter (slash (/) character). Multiple data element values within a group are separated by one position delimiters (space characters).
In Bar Coding, the TEI structure consists of a one position Start Character (*),the four position TEI Code, data element value and a one position Stop Character (*).
