How Provisions are Affected by Period Limits
The provision for a stock option program is determined, among other things, by the rate of the corresponding base instrument at the end of the analysis period.
However, the length of the analysis period also influences the provision amount: A reduction in the number of options resulting from the annual forfeiture rate also reduces the provision amount:
Example
The annual employee forfeiture rate is 10%. You start the calculation of provisions for a stock option program in 1/1999. The calculation is run to 12/2000.
On 1/1999 the amount of options is 10000.
The analysis period is 2 fiscal years.
The number of options to be taken into account has therefor reduced by 12/2000 to ( 1 - 2*10% )*10000 = 8000.
If the analysis period were to begin in 1/2000 - still ending in 12/2000, the number of options would only have reduced by 10% instead of 20%, giving a remainder of 9000 options.
For this reason, the from-period influences the result of the simulation just as much as the to-period.
