Definition
The market data area from which the definitions of the reference interest rates for calculating forward interest rates are read.
Use
When the system calculates a forward interest rate, it uses reference interest rate definitions (information about interest periods, interest calculation methods, calendars, payment frequency, and so on) to internally generate the cash flow for the reference interest rate, and then calculates the forward rate on the basis of this cash flow.
The market data (yield curves) used for calculating the forward interest rate do not necessarily come from the same market data area as the reference interest rate definitions, but from the market data area requested for an analysis.
Dependencies
If only one market data area has been flagged as a public market data area, then the system identifies this as the market data area that is relevant for contract data, and uses the reference interest rate definitions from this market data area to calculate the forward interest rate.
If there is more than one public market data area, the system reads the market data area requested for the analysis in question. This can lead to problems (see the example below). Therefore, always make sure that you have flagged one, and only one, market data area as a public market data area.
Example
Only market data area "PBL1" has been flagged as a public market data area. This means that only the reference interest rates from this market data area can be used for contract data. However, you want to run an analysis for market data from market data area "MDC1".
In order to calculate the forward interest rate, the system reads the reference interest rate definitions from market data area "PBL1", but uses the yield curve from market data area "MDC1" to actually calculate the forward rate.
If, say, there were not one, but two, public market data areas ("PBL1" and "PBL2"), the system would have no other choice but to read the reference interest rate definitions from market data area "MDC1" (the market data area requested by the analysis), and they might not exist there (or they might be different than the definitions in "PBL1" and "PBL2").
