Definition
Shows whether the rate/price is a bid, middle or ask rate/price.
The bid rate is the price that a buyer is willing to pay for a security. The ask rate is the price that a seller is willing to sell a security for. The middle rate lies between the bid rate and the ask rate.
The arithmetical relationships between these rates/prices are as follows:
- Security prices (prices of stocks, bonds, options, and so on)
Bid Price < Middle Price < Ask Price
- Exchange rates
The "security" here is the currency that is to be purchased or sold. Since an indirectly quotated exchange rate is the inverse of a directly quoted exchange rate, there are different arithmetical relationships for each:Bid Exchange Rate (Direct) < Middle Exchange Rate (Direct) < Ask Exchange Rate (Direct)
Bid Exchange Rate (Indirect) > Middle Exchange Rate (Indirect) > Ask Exchange Rate (Indirect)
- Interest rates
The "security" here is the financial transaction at this interest rate. The lower the interest rate is, the higher the price of the financial instrument is. Since, for example, a higher bond price means a lower yield on the bond, the following relationship applies here:Bid Interest Rate > Middle Interest Rate > Ask Interest Rate
