Definition
The market data area from which the Customizing settings for market data are taken. The master market data area is a market data area that is not dependent on any other market data area.
Use
You define a market data area as a master market data area by manually entering the appropriate market data area as the master market data area. In a master market data area, you define the Customizing settings for market data in general.
You can then create more market data areas that are dependent on the master market data area that you have just created. All of these dependent market data areas will then have the same master data Customizing settings as the master market data area (in other words, the dependent market data areas have the same exchange rate categories, reference interest rates, security price categories, and so on, as the master market data area). The market data records of the master market data area is automaically valid in dependent market data areas.
Note: You can only create market data Customizing and market data records in the master market data area.
Example
A bank comprises several legal entities, all of which are subordinate to the parent company. Market data areas are used to keep the market data in the various legal entities of the bank (and for the parent company as a whole) separate. It should be possible to evaluate variable-rate loans (with reference interest rates in their transaction data) using both the market data of a legal entity and the market data of the parent company.
In this case, we recommend that you use only one master market data area, and otherwise only market data areas that are dependent on this master market data area. This will ensure that the reference interest rate used when the variable-rate loan was created is known both in the legal entity and in the parent company. Indeed, it is this setting that makes it possible for both a legal entity and the parent company to evaluate the transaction in the first place.
