Definition
In the case of indirectly quoted rates, this is the spread that you add to the middle rate in order to calculate the bid rate. You subtract this spread from the middle rate to calculate the ask rate.
Use
If you specify a spread, this will enable the system to use bid and ask rates by deriving these from the middle rate table entries. This means that you have fewer exchanges rates to maintain.
Unlike exchange rates, which usually fluctuate from day to day, spreads remain fixed over a longer period of time. This means that, once you have set up spreads in your system, you will rarely need to make changes to them.
