Definition
Determines whether an exchange rate is quoted directly or indirectly.
If the rate is quoted indirectly, the exchange rate tells you how many units of the "from" currency are required to give one unit of the "to" currency. To translate an amount from the "from" currency to the "to" currency, the amount is divided by this rate.
Example of an exchange rate that is quoted indirectly ("from" currency = DEM, "to" currency = EUR):
1.95583 DEM is worth 1 EUR.
If the rate is quoted directly, the exchange rate tells you how much one unit of the "from" currency is worth, expressed in units of the "to" currency. To translate an amount from the "from" currency to the "to" currency, the amount is multiplied by this rate.
Example of an exchange rate that is quoted directly ("from" currency = DEM, "to" currency = EUR):
1 DEM costs 0.51129 EUR.
