In this step, you define for each purchasing document whether reference characteristics in Purchasing are taken into account.
To enable data exchange between the purchasing document and configuration, you activate the Reference characteristics indicator. In configuration, you can read and directly change purchasing data via characteristic value object dependencies.
Example
You created a reference characteristic in the VBAP-KWMENG field. As a result, you can access this field when you configure a sales document. This information can be processed in the object dependency.
When you set the Reference characteristics field in this function you can read the EKPO-MENGE or EBAN-MENGE (purchase requisition) field when you configure a purchasing document with the relevant document type.
The field also activates the rewriting of data into the purchasing document. If the value of a reference characteristic in the VCSD_UPDATE-KWMENG field is changed (for example, by object dependencies), the system copies this value to the fields EKPO-MENGE or EBAN-MENGE (purchase requisition); that is, the item quantity is changed.
Requirements
A prerequisite is that a purchasing item has been configured. In addition, reference characteristics must exist in selected fields of sales document tables in the respective class. For information on assigning purchasing fields and sales fields, see the SAP Library for SAP Mill Products under Enhancements in Materials Management (MM) -> Object Characteristics in Purchasing. In includes LMEGUICI5, LMEGUICJP, and LMEVAF03 in Transaction SE38, those who have knowledge of ABAP can read directly how to assign purchase fields and sales fields.
The rewriting of configuration data into the purchasing document is only supported by the Enjoy Transactions ME22N and ME21N or ME51N and ME52N (purchase requisitions).
Standard settings
The reference characteristics in Purchasing are deactivated by default so that they do not inadvertently change purchasing data with object dependencies from sales.
Recommendation
If you want to use reference characteristics in Purchasing, check when you create the object dependency that the fields in Sales now also read or change purchasing data. By using an object dependency in the field VBAK-MILL_APPL_ID, you can define in the object dependency which applications the configuration calls up. If this field is filled with 'MM', you are in the configuration for a purchasing item. Through this, you can create application-dependent object dependencies.
