In this step, you define the types of geographical unit and the ways in which they can be assigned when you maintain geographical structures.
You define the following for each geographical unit:
- Types of geographical unit that can be assigned to it at a higher level
- Types of postal unit that can be assigned to it at a lower level (The types of postal unit are defined in the program: see F4 help.)
A maximum of 3 entries are possible for higher- and lower-level assignments of geographical and postal units for each geographical unit type. The lower-level types of postal unit are proposed as defaults when assigning postal units to geographical units weighted from left to right.
Example
- Assignment of geographical unit to geographical unit
According to the standard settings, the geographical unit 'street' can only have one lower-level assignment of a street section (or a type under 'Street section' in the hierarchy, for example a house number). - Assignment of postal unit to geographical unit
According to the standard settings, you can assign two types of postal unit to a street: street sections or postal codes. The type entered on the left (street sections) is displayed as the first default value for the assignment and the other type allowed can be set via the menu.
Recommendation
You should not create your first geographical structures until you have defined the types of geographical units and their possible assignments.
Activities
- Check whether the types of geographical unit already in the system and their assignments meet your company's requirements.
- Delete the types of geographical unit you do not require.
- Add any new types of geographical unit you may require, specifying the following for each entry:
- Specify a unique numeric key with a maximum of two characters.
- Specify the appropriate short and long text.
- Enter the key(s) for the possible higher-level types of geographical unit starting at the left of the field.
- Enter the key(s) for the possible lower-level types of postal unit starting at the left of the field. The following keys are possible for the type of postal unit:
- 01 Country
- 02 City
- 03 Postal code
- 04 Street or street section
Further notes
You can also change the types of geographical unit in an operative system, although the changes then only apply to structures created from that point onwards. While this will not cause inconsistencies, the structures already in the system may not comply with the new structuring rules. This may cause problems when maintaining the structures.
