In this step you can activate, per Plant, the Actual Costing for materials and activity consumption update in the quantity structure.
If you use Actual Costing, you can decide whether (in addition to material consumption) activity consumption on cost centers and process consumption of business processes that are required to produce a material should be updated in the quantity structure in the Actual Costing/Material Ledger.
Depending on which activation type is chosen
- Actual consumption is updated in the quantity structure but not considered by price determination.
You can use this setting if you simply want information about the complete actual quantity structure. You can assign variances between the plan price of the cost center/activity type or process, and the actual price calculated at period end to the particular cost object at period-end closing using the function 'Revaluation at Actual Prices'.
- Actual consumption is updated in the quantity structure and taken into account for the price determination.
If you choose this setting, the variances between the plan price and the actual price are adjusted subsequently. The cost center or the process is then credited and the material associated with the consumption is debited. In the context of multi-level price determination, these variances can be rolled up through the production structure up to the finished product in the same way that material price variances are rolled up.
If you choose this setting, you cannot use the function 'Revaluation at Actual Prices' at period closing in Cost Object Controlling, as the variances from the cost centers/processes are debited to the material direct. If you do use the function 'Revaluation at Actual Prices' at period closing, the cost centers/processes are credited twice and the materials are debited twice.
Constraints
If you decide to have your actual consumption updated in the quantity structure and considered during price determination, all allocations to manufacturing orders that are settled to a material are posted at a constant price throughout the period. The valuation strategy is invalidated inasmuch as a price is calculated according to the strategy only for the first activity allocation. All subsequent activity consumption is valuated with the fixed price even if, according to the valuation strategy, a different price should be used.
A price change within the period, therefore, is not considered when allocating to orders that are settled to materials.
Requirements
You have activated the Material Ledger for those valuation areas that contain these plants.
Activate Valuation Areas for Material Ledger.
You can only activate the activity consumption update in a plant if the Actual Costing is also activated in that plant.
In the step 'Automatic Postings' in the Customizing of Materials Management, define a G/L account for the closing entries in Actual Costing/Material Ledger for transaction GBB (offsetting entry for inventory posting) and for the account grouping code AUI (credit cost center/process with actual price adjustment). You must have already created this G/L account as a Materials Management profit and loss account in Financial Accounting and as a primary cost element in Cost Element Accounting. The credit to the cost center or business process is identified under this cost element.
Automatic Postings
Standard settings
Neither Actual Costing nor activity consumption update in the quantity structure are active in the standard system.
Recommendation
Activities
- Determine whether you want to work with actual costing.
- Determine whether you want to work with activity consumption update.
- Set the indicators Act. costing and activity consumption update (depending on what you want) in the appropriate plants.
- Save the changes.
- Check the settings for Actual Costing.
You can also find this function in the application under Accounting -> Controlling -> Actual Costing/Material Ledger -> Tools -> Check Customizing.
Further notes
You can deactivate Actual Costing at any time to avoid having to update very large amounts of data in the actual quantity structure. If you do this you have to do without the functions for actual costing in the particular period.
The indicator activity type update must not be changed or deleted within a period. This would cause the system to post incorrect material debits during price determination.
