Use

In this Customizing activity, you can specify settings for composition groups and product variants and also assign product variants to composition groups.

Composition groups define the composition data model and specify how data is read. Product variants allow a product to be treated in different ways depending on the assigned validity area categories. Product variants are displayed in the product structure after the BOMBOS transfer.

For more information, see Composition Groups and Product Variants below.

Composition Groups

Use

You can use composition group when you perform the following functions:

  • Explosions and normalizations in the workbench (all composition groups)
  • Checks (specified composition groups)
  • Imports of non-EU supplier data (standard composition)
  • Work list management
  • Import tool (material category-dependent)
  • Exports (using explosions or normalizations; no direct use of composition groups)

Prerequisites

You have assigned the composition properties to a composition group in Customizing for SAP Environment, Health and Safety in activity Specify Value Assignment Types.

You have made settings for the required usage values that are used for the composition groups in Customizing for SAP Environment, Health and Safety in activitiesSpecify Ratings, Specify Validity Area Categories, and Specify Validity Areas.

Standard settings

The standard system is delivered with the following composition groups and their possible uses:

  • Customer Listing
    • Used to list customers of the material; exists virtually in the composition that is displayed in the compliance workbench.
    • Used for substances and preparations, but only to store uses and exposure information collected from customers.
  • Input Composition
    • Used to define all input components for production. For regulatory lists, the composition defines the product structure that is used to collect and determine declarable substances.
  • Use and Exposure Composition
    • Used to define all components that at least partially remain in the product.
    • Used for substances and preparations to process the use and exposure data that was collected.
  • Standard Composition
    • Used to define the pure substances in the product.
    • Used (within product safety) as a basis for the calculations rule set
    • Used for substances and preparations to manage use and exposure information for the registration process
    • If an input composition does not exist, the composition is used to determine the declarable substances
  • Supplier Listing
    • Used to list suppliers of the material
    • Used for substances and preparations to store use and exposure data with the registration status from suppliers
    • Used to store requested declarable substances (SVHC) from suppliers or the detailed product structure of the supplier

If more than one composition is handled within a composition group, there are priorities and usage values defined to control which one is used for reading data.

Activities

Consider how composition groups can support viewing and reading data for your specific industry and organizational needs. Configure the composition groups so that they map the data model used.
Note: A composition can only be used within one composition group. It is not possible to use a composition in several groups.

  • Check the standard settings for composition groups and adapt them.
  • Check the settings for the prioritization of composition groups as well as the default composition.
  • Check the assignments of product variants to composition groups. You cannot change the general product variant assignment. This is a default variant and always assigned.

Example

You maintain data for the product P1 and use three composition groups:

  • Standard Composition (display sequence 2)
  • Input Composition (display sequence 1)
  • Supplier Listing (display sequence 3)

Legal composition (priority 1) and standard composition (priority 2) are assigned to the standard composition group.

P1 has data maintained in every composition. The included part P2 has data maintained in all compositions except the legal composition. In this case, the product structure would be displayed in the following way with additional phantom nodes for the composition groups:

@CX@ Product P1

|--@3M@ Input Composition

| @CX@ Product P2

| |--@3M@ Input Composition

| |--@3M@ Standard Composition

| |--@L9@ Supplier Listing

|--@3M@ Legal Composition

| @N4@ Pure Sub 1

| @N4@ Pure Sub 2

|--@L9@ Supplier Listing

| @BI@ Supplier 1

| @BI@ Supplier 2

Product Variants

Use

You can use product variants in the following situations:

  • Multi-BOM
    • A product or part has multiple BOMs with different usages
    • A product or part has multiple alternatives for a BOM (with the same usage)
    • A product or part has BOMs in different plants
  • Multi-Supplier
    • A part is purchased from multiple suppliers/manufacturers
  • Custom
    • Customer-specific variants (requires additional implementation in the BOMBOS interface)

Requirements

In Customizing for SAP Environment, Health and Safety, in the activity Specify Validity Areas, you have configured the required validity areas for the different validity area categories that have been assigned to the product variants.

Standard settings

The following default settings are shipped:

Variant    Active    Val. Area Category    Priority    Icon    Description

ALTERNATE    X    BOMALT    5    @AP@    Alternative

CUSTOM    X    CUSTOM    6    @A7@    Custom

CUSTOMER    X    CUSTOMER    1    @L4@    Customer

PLANT    X    PLANT    4    @A8@    Plant

SUPP_AMPL        SUPPLIER    2    @L9@    Supplier

SUPP_PIR    X    SUPPLIER    2    @L9@    Supplier

USAGE    X    BOMUSAGE    3    @6E@    BOM usage

Activities

Check the standard settings and adapt them if necessary.

Example

Your product P has four different BOMs. This means there are four different variants:

  • An engineering BOM in plant 1 and plant 2 (two variants)
  • A production BOM in plant 1 and plant 3 (two variants)

The BOMs contain the following BOM positions:

BOM Usage    Plant    BOM Positions

Engineering    1    A, B

Engineering    2    B, C

Production    1    A, D

Production    3    B, D

The above information applies to the following three cases:

Case 1

You set the priority for the BOM usage variant to 1 and the priority for the plant variant to 2.

Phantom nodes appear in the following product structure for the BOM usages Engineering and Production and for the three plants:

@CX@ Product P

    @6E@ Engineering

        @A8@ Plant 1

            @CX@ Part A

            @CX@ Part B

        @A8@ Plant 2

            @CX@ Part B

            @CX@ Part C

    @6E@ Production

        @A8@ Plant 1

            @CX@ Part A

            @CX@ Part D

        @A8@ Plant 3

            @CX@ Part B

            @CX@ Part D

Case 2

Now, you change the settings for the priority for the BOM usage variant to 2 and the priority for the plant variant to 1.

Phantom nodes appear in the following product structure for the BOM usages Engineering and Production and for the three plants:

Note: Single phantom nodes in the composition are suppressed. The BOM usages for plant 2 and 3 are not displayed.

@CX@ Product P

    @A8@ Plant 1

        @6E@ Engineering

            @CX@ Part A

            @CX@ Part B

        @6E@ Production

            @CX@ Part A

            @CX@ Part D

    @A8@ Plant 2

        @CX@ Part B

        @CX@ Part C

    @A8@ Plant 3

        @CX@ Part B

        @CX@ Part D
