Use
In this IMG activity you define the relationship between the cross-docking plants that physically represent the cross-docking warehouses and the storage locations to which the inventory in these warehouses is assigned.
In addition, you can maintain the shipping point to be used in ERP when goods are shipped from the corresponding cross-docking warehouse.
Requirements
Before you can make the assignment, you must first define a plant for each supplying warehouse and a related storage location for each cross-docking warehouse that will receive goods from this supplying warehouse.
- You define plants as organizational units under Logistics General in menu option Define Plants.
- You define storage locations as organizational units of Material Management in menu option Define Storage Locations.
You must define the shipping points that are assigned to the cross-docking warehouses assign them to the supplying plant.
- You define shipping points as organizational units under Logistics Execution in menu option Define Shipping Points.
- You make the assignments between shipping points and plants in menu option Assign shipping point to plant.
Additional prerequisites are necessary if external warehouses without own inventory management but separate addresses are involved in the transportation cross-docking process. The inventory of such an external warehouse is managed by the same plant as the main warehouse.
- You define a plant for each external warehouse, representing the physical location of the external warehouse. This plant has no inventory functions.
- You define a storage location for cross-docking (CD) stock and assign it to the supplying plant of the cross-docking process. This storage location models the cross-docking stock in the external warehouse.
Standard settings
Activities
- Determine which cross-docking warehouses are involved in the shipping process starting from each separate supplying warehouse.
- Maintain the assignments for each combination of supplying plant and cross-docking warehouse.
- If goods are cross-docked through an external warehouse, enter the plant representing the physical location of the external warehouse and the storage location for CD stock as defined for the external warehouse in the assignment table.
If the transportation cross-docking process starts at an external warehouse you additionally have to perform the activity Define Source Plants for External Warehouses.
Example
Assume that shipping from the Dallas warehouse can involve cross-docking warehouses in Atlanta and Miami. In this case, you make the following Customizing settings:
- Define the supplying plant A representing the supplying warehouse in Dallas.
- Define plants B and C representing the cross-docking warehouses in Atlanta and Miami.
Warehouse Plant
Atlanta B
Miami C
- Define storage locations assigned to the Dallas plant for each cross-docking warehouse.
Warehouse Stockkeeping Plant Storage Loc.
Atlanta A B
Miami A C
- Define shipping points A, B and C and assign them all to plant A.
- Maintain the relationship between physical plants, storage locations for CD stock, and the shipping points by using the current activity
Warehouse Stockkeeping Physical Plant Storage Loc. Shipping Point
Atlanta A B B B
Miami A C C C
