Diagnosis

You attempted to execute a function for a particular sub-list (basic list, statistic or ranked list). To do this, you have to place the cursor on the desired sub-list. The current cursor position does not permit identification of any statistic or ranked list. It either refers to a sub-list which you cannot access with the function you chose, or it points to the totals line of a statistic.

Procedure

Place the cursor on a line of the desired sub-list, but avoid blank lines, header lines and, in the case of statistics, totals lines.
Check that the function is valid for the sub-list, since some functions cannot be used in basic lists where the lines do not all have the same structure (i.e. multiple line lists).
