Definition
The number of votes per share serves to describe the votes of stockholders at the annual stockholders meeting. It is dependent on the type of security. In the case of normal voting stocks, this value is 1; in the case of non-voting stock, however, it is 0.
Sometimes a share only entitles the owner to a fraction of a vote. This may be the case, for example, with securities that are traded on the stock market but which only represent a certain fraction of a stock. One example is American depositary receipts (ADRs), which are traded on the New York Stock Exchange in place of the stock they represent.
