The entry of a default selection for a characteristic has to do with data entry layouts:
When you define a lead column as data-driven in a data entry layout, the system then accesses during data entry the default selection you specify here.
Hence, for the items with this breakdown category the default selection determines the default values for the breakdown of the characteristic.
