Use

If the posting item for the negative investment resides in the balance sheet, its offsetting item must be either in the balance sheet or the income statement, depending on whether the scope of reported data has an effect on net income or not.

If the posting item for the negative investment belongs to the statistical area, then its offsetting item is also statistical. If this is the case, you can use the overall statistical offsetting item for any scope of reported data.
