Definition

The tax number is a registration number that is typically issued by a tax authority to business partners that have been registered with that authority as a tax payer. Each business partner may have several tax numbers, since it may be registered with several authorities (for example, in several countries or states). In some countries, different types of tax numbers exist, which may have to be printed on invoices or be used in legal reporting. In the European community, having a registration number for VAT for certain countries strongly influences the tax determination, namely the location where the taxes may accrue.
