Definition
Codification of a tax-relevant location.
The jurisdiction code is a hierarchically-structured entity that contains the location information as concatenated substrings, each representing the location of its respective jurisdiction level.
It is used for countries which have a strong regional dependence of tax rates, such as the US and Cananda. The structure of the jurisdiction code can be configured according to each country. Since this is a proprietary code, the definition of the structures may vary from application to application.
In many countries there are locations which have a special tax status where certain exemptions are granted (for example, EU tax free regions like Helgoland, Canary Islands or Brazilian Zona Franca). Often, the boundaries of such special regions do not necessarily coincide with political regions which are defined by the region parameter. Instead, such exempted regions can be handled by providing a corresponding jurisdiction code.
