Documentation

Definition

Indicates the beginning amount in a salary range, used for calculating tax deductions. The last two digits of the amount in this field indicate cents. For example, the value 10020 is R100.20.

Note

The ranges are issued by the Revenue Service and are continually updated in accordance with the latest tax rules.

Example

The standard tax deduction is calculated as follows (based on the 1998 tax year): An employee's annual salary is R40,000. As the salary is between the range R35,000-R45,000, the tax deduction on R40,000 is calculated by first taking the standard deduction for R35,000 which is R7,200. The remaining R5,000 is calculated at 32% to equal R1,600. The total basic deduction is therefore R8,800 (R7,200 + R1,600).
