Definition

A unit in a controlling area that classifies the activities performed in a cost center.

Example: Activity types in production cost centers are machine hours or finished units.

Use

A cost center can be assigned to one activity type, multiple activity types, or none at all. The cost planning, cost control, and cost allocation functions take place on the cost center/activity type or cost center level. Actual postings take place on the cost center level.

Activity types are required for internal activity allocation, where activities produced by the cost center are used as tracing factors for costs. You can use activity types to do the following:

  • Measure the internal activities
  • Enter the internal activities either manually, automatically, or indirectly based on final costs
  • Allocate the internal activities

Allocation requires the creation of corresponding (measurable) activity types and cost elements for activity allocation in the SAP system. Activity types are used as measurements of cost creation.
