Post Adjustment Multiplier
The Post Adjustment system was designed to equalize purchasing power of United Nations salaries for professionals and higher categories, taking into account cost-of-living differences between the base city of the system (that is, New York) and other duty stations. The goal of the system is to ensurie that no matter where staff in the United Nations common system work, at some 180 locations worldwide, their take-home pay has a purchasing power equivalent to that at the base city of the system.
Surveys measure the cost of living of a duty station to the cost of living at the base city of the system (New York). A multiplier is determined for each duty station. One multiplier is equal to one percent of base salary. A table of multipliers is published each month. This is paid in addition to the net/base salary.
Staff members in the professional and higher categories, and those in the field service category assigned to a duty station for one year or more are entitled to post adjustment.
A staff member assigned to a new duty station may continue to receive up to six months of the post adjustment applicable to the former duty station provided that members of his or her immediate family (spouse and children) remain at that duty station.
