Definition

Indicates the current value of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for a particular location. This is required to calculate the dearness allowance for employees based in that location. This value may vary during the course of the year and is related to the changes in the cost of living in that location.

Example

The value of CPI Mumbai is Rs. 2000 for the period January to March 1999. This value changes to Rs. 2200 for the period April to June 1999.

The difference in the amounts ie. Rs 200 will be used to calculate the employee's variable dearness allowance by multiplying this difference to the rupees per point index maintained by the employer.
