Definition

When this field is selected, it means that while calculating length of service for severance payment, the leftover days would be considered and prorated based on part time and full time service.

If this field is not selected then the length of service would be calculated using round to advantage approach.

An example using both the approaches is given below -

Prorate using leftover

CASE I - Prorate leftover days (Field selected) with PT/FT service
Employee has:
Prior service: 01.02.1998 to the 27.03.2002 Part time : 25 hrs/ week
Current service:28.03.2002 to the 05.07.2002 Full time : 37.10 hrs/wk
Completed years calculation:
PT Service calculation -
4 years and 1 month PT service = 4.083333
PT factor = PT hours/FT hours (25/37.10) = 0.6738544
4.08333 x .6738544 = 2.75156 years (prorated for PT service)
FT Service calculation -
3 months FT service = 0.25
Total FT equivalent years of service = 2.75156 + 0.25 = 3.00156
Leftover calculation:
26 days PT service (01.03.2002 - 27.03.2002)
7 day FT service (29.06.02 - 05.07.2002)
Leftover days in terms of FT service = 26 * (25/37.10)+7 = 24.5202 dys
= 0.06811
So total LOS = 3.00156 + 0.06811 = 3.06967

CASE II - Prorate leftover days(Field selected) with only FT service
Employee has :
Current Service (FT) : 2 mths
Prior service (FT) : 11 years and 1 month
Completed quarter calculation:
Current service : 0 quarters
Prior Service : 11 * 4 = 44 quarters

Leftover calculation :
2 months from prior service + 1 month from current service = 3 months
= 1 quarter
Total LOS in quarters = 44 + 1 = 45 completed quarters

Round to advantage

CASE I : Round to Advantage(Field not selected) with FT/PT service
Employee has:
Prior service: 01.02.1998 to the 27.03.2002 Part time : 25 hrs/ week
Current service:28.03.2002 to the 05.07.2002 Full time : 37.10 hrs/wk
Completed years calculation:
PT Service calculation -
4 years and 1 month PT service = 4.083333
PT factor = PT hours/FT hours (25/37.10) = 0.6738544
4.08333 x .6738544 = 2.75156 years (prorated for PT service)
FT Service calculation -
3 months FT service = 0.25
Total FT equivalent years of service = 2.75156 + 0.25 = 3.00156
Leftover calculation:
26 days PT service (01.03.2002 - 27.03.2002)
7 day FT service (29.06.02 - 05.07.2002)
Total days = 33 days = 1 month = .083333
( Considered as Full time as always the rounding is done based on whichever is higher)
So Total FT equivalent years of service = 3.00156 + 0.83333
