Definition

The footprint capacity of a transport unit defines the (footprint) area available for cargo.

Use

The footprint capacity determines the size of cargo that will fit in or on the transport unit. Depending on the transport unit, the footprint capacity may be equal to or different from the product of length and width.

Example

The transport unit for a truck will have a footprint capacity quite close to the product of its length and width. The near triangular front area of a boat will have a footprint capacity of approximately half the product of its length and width. A reinforced transport unit, for example for dangerous goods, will also have a footprint capacity that is smaller than the product of length and width.
