Definition

The service level specifies the amount of target stock "risk" that the company is prepared to accept. If no entry is made, the system assumes a risk level of 100%.

The target stock service level works exactly in the same way as the safety stock service level.

The Coverage period and the standard day definition together determine the amount of (working) days stock is required to be held. In order to build in more flexibility, most companies (and SAP-IBU Oil & Gas- MRP) also incorporate a service level into the safety stock calculation - a percentage value that determines how much of the calculated safety stock to use. The service level represents the level of risk the company is prepared to take with respect to running out of stock.

Examples

The safety/target stock may be based on a four-day coverage period, but the company knows that for each day there is a chance that the product will be late. The company estimates the probability that the product will not be late in percent values for each day:

1 day - 80%, 2 days - 40%, 3 days - 15%, 4 days - < 5%.

The company is prepared to accept no more than a 15% risk, so will set the service level to ignore the requirement for Day 4. As a result, the service level in this example is 75%.
