Documentation
Definition
The serial number is the number that is assigned by the manufacturer for an individual piece of equipment.
Use
You can use the serial number as a complement to the manufacturer part number.
Examples
You buy three pieces of equipment of the same type from a manufacturer. The part number assigned by the manufacturer to the three parts is "4711" in each case. You cannot differentiate between the three pieces of equipment using just the part number.
However, the manufacturer can allocate an individual serial number to each separate piece of equipment, which then compliments the manufacturer part number:
Manufacturer part number: 4711
Serial number of Equip. 1: 001
Serial number of Equip. 2: 002
Serial number of Equip. 3: 003
