Definition

The floating average rate is a base value for calculating opportunity volume, as well as realized and unrealized exchange gains and losses. It is only relevant for positions.

If purchases flow into the position, the system determines a new floating average. The procedure also takes into account negative positions, which can result from short sales. In this case, the floating average rate is adjusted with each sale. If the +/- sign of the position changes due to a purchase or sale, the residual purchase or sale which, starting from a zero position, defines the new position with the changed sign, forms the basis for calculating the new floating average.

You can display the floating average as:

  • An amount (in position currency), such as for stock positions
  • An exchange rate, such as for currency positions
  • A percentage rate, such as for bonds and debentures
  • An index value, such as for options on stock indices
  • An effective interest rate, such as for zerobonds.

In the case of positions resulting from a single flow, the floating average is identical with the purchase or sale price.
