Definition
A corporation that acquires another corporation during a certain tax year is called the successor employer. The corporation thus acquired is called the predecessor employer. Upon acquisition, the successor employer assumes the responsibility of processing payroll for all employees of the predecessor employer.
For the purpose of Social Security withholding, the successor employer is entitled to credit wages earned by employees of the predecessor employer toward the total wage base, provided that certain acquisition, employment and payment conditions are fulfilled.
If employees of the tax company at hand were employed by a predecessor employer and if you would now like to credit these employees' predecessor earnings toward the wage base of the successor employer, then enter an identical value in this field for the tax companies that correspond to the successor and predecessor employers. Once an identical value is present in this field for both tax companies, the standard system can carry forward previous cumulations for employees of the tax company at hand, even though those employees now belong to a different tax company - that of the successor employer.
