Definition
Use
Set this indicator if you want the COBRA coverage continuation period to begin on the day after the end of any regular coverage continuation period defined in the plan's termination rule. The total coverage continuation period will, therefore, be longer than legally required under COBRA. Note that, if the termination rule for a plan states that termination is immediate, setting this indicator has no effect.
Do not set this indicator if you want the COBRA coverage continuation period to begin on the day after the event and continue for the legally required COBRA coverage period only, regardless of any regular coverage continuation period defined in the plan's termination rule.
Note
Example
An employee experiences the qualifying event Reduction in working hours and the termination rule for the employee's health plan states that termination takes place on the first day of the next quarter.
The employee's normal enrollment therefore continues after the event as defined in the termination rule, after which she is enrolled in a COBRA health plan. However, the employer has defined that the COBRA coverage continuation period starts once an event has occurred. The COBRA health plan therefore runs until 18 months after the qualifying event occurred. In other words, the participation period in COBRA is less than 18 months for the employee.
