Documentation
Definition
Determines the maximum amount of coverage to which the cost rule will be applied.
Use
Enter an amount in this field if you want to graduate cost depending on the coverage elected by an employee. When calculating costs, the system uses the step limits you have defined in order to determine which cost rule applies to which portion of the actual coverage elected by the employee.
Example
In the Life Insurance plan, the first $100,000 of coverage costs $3 per $10,000 coverage. Any coverage between $100,000 and $300,000 costs $4 per $10,000 coverage. Coverage above $300,000 costs $5 per $10,000 coverage.
The following cost rules are set up:
Step limit Base unit Cost factor
$100,000 $10,000 3.0
$300,000 $10,000 4.0
$9999999999999 $10,000 5.0
If an employee chooses a coverage of $500,000, the cost of this coverage is calculated as follows:
- The first $100,000 of coverage (up to the first limit) costs $30.
- The next $200,000 of coverage (difference between the first and second limit) costs $80.
- The next $200,000 of coverage (difference between the second limit and the actual coverage selected) costs $100
- Total costs are therefore $210
