Definition

Number (or components thereof) assigned to a product in classification.

Use

Customs monitoring of cross-border goods movements is based on numbers from a systematically structured nomenclature of goods, whose contents are defined by the customs authorities or customs offices. All products can be identified uniquely through their assignment to these numbers within the classification framework. One part of the numbers describes the type of product, while other parts contain encoded information such as import/export descriptions, customs quotas, and customs duty rates - or refer to preference rules.

The first six places of these numbers are identical internationally and recorded in the Harmonized System (HS) for the unique identification of products. Other potential places in these numbers are defined by the respective customs union or countries, in supplement to the six HS places, for more detailed classification or recording of country-specific information. Each number or part thereof has a specific task, depending on the process.

  • Chapter of the HS code
  • Item of the HS code
  • Subitem of the HS code
  • CN code
  • HS code or parts thereof

  • Tariff number, such as commodity code, tariff code number, ICCN/ECCN, CAP number, or number from the TARIC customs tariff system
