Definition

System in which applications are integrated in a common data basis.

The distribution of data between systems means that each system within a network has to be uniquely identified. A logical system is used for this purpose.

In the SAP system, a client represents a logical system. In client maintenance you can assign a logical system to a client (by choosing Goto -> Detail).

The logical system is relevant to the following SAP areas:

  • ALE, general: A communication takes place between two or more logical systems.
  • ALE business process (for example, cost center accounting): Definition of the system in which a specific application runs. Master data can only be changed in this system.
  • Workflow objects: The logical system in which the object is contained is always shown in the key of a workflow object.

When you are maintaining the logical system, you should note that:

  • The logical system must be unique throughout the enterprise. It must not be used by any other system in the ALE system group.
  • Once the system is live, you can no longer change the logical system. If the logical system in a document reference is not initial and does not match your own, the system assumes that the document is contained in another system.
